Mangal Unicode Font & Remington GAIL Layout Guide

Mangal is the default Devanagari font created for Microsoft Windows. It is a Unicode OpenType typeface, meaning it is universally readable across the internet and modern digital platforms. Since major government selection bodies (like Staff Selection Commission - SSC, CPCT, and State Judiciaries) have transitioned their exams to Unicode, understanding Mangal and its corresponding keyboard layouts is essential for competitive success.

The Concept of Input Method Editors (IME)

Unlike legacy fonts where you just change the font selection in a drop-down menu, typing in Unicode Mangal requires installing an Input Method Editor (IME). An IME is a software bridge that intercepts your keyboard inputs and generates actual Devanagari Unicode characters in the system. The most popular tool for this is 'Microsoft Indic Input 3' or the built-in Windows 10/11 Devanagari language pack.

Remington GAIL vs. InScript Keyboard Layouts

When typing on Mangal Unicode, you can choose between different keyboard layouts. The two most common are:

  • Remington GAIL: This layout mimics the traditional typewriter Remington system. If you already know how to type in Kruti Dev, you should select Remington GAIL, as it lets you type in Mangal Unicode using your existing skills.
  • InScript Keyboard: This is the official government standard layout approved by the Government of India. It is a highly scientific layout designed specifically for Indian languages. InScript maps vowels on the left side of the keyboard and consonants on the right side, leading to highly balanced typing speeds.

How to Enable Remington GAIL for Mangal in Windows 11

To enable Remington GAIL typing in Windows 11: Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region. Click 'Add a language' and search for 'Hindi'. Once installed, click the triple dots (...) next to 'Hindi' and select 'Language options'. Under Keyboards, click 'Add a keyboard' and choose 'Hindi Remington (GAIL)' or install 'Microsoft Indic Input 3' for legacy version support. Use Win+Space to switch keyboards.
