Understanding the Remington Layout
The Remington layout is split into two primary layers: normal keys and shift-modified keys. Let's look at the basic mappings:
- Letter 'd' types 'क' (ka)
- Letter 'k' types 'ा' (aa matra)
- Letter 'h' types 'प' (pa)
- Letter 'f' types 'ि' (short-i matra)
- Shift + 'd' types 'ख्' (half-kha)
- Shift + 'h' types 'फ' (pha)
Essential Special Alt Codes (Kruti Dev Alt Code List)
Certain complex Devanagari characters and half-letters do not fit on the keyboard, even with the Shift key. To type these, you must hold the 'Alt' key on your keyboard and type a specific numerical sequence on the numeric keypad (Numpad). Make sure NumLock is turned on!
- Alt + 0161 = 'द्' (half-da)
- Alt + 0163 = 'द्ध' (ddha conjunct)
- Alt + 0170 = 'द्र' (dra)
- Alt + 0184 = 'ध्र' (dhra)
- Alt + 0216 = 'क्र' (kra)
- Alt + 0221 = 'द्य' (dya)
How to Practice and Build Typing Speed
Mastering the Remington layout requires building strong muscle memory. Here are 3 rules for typing success: (1) Maintain correct posture and place your fingers on the middle home row (A-S-D-F and J-K-L-Semicolon). (2) Focus entirely on accuracy in the beginning, speed will follow naturally once muscle memory is established. (3) Practice standard Devanagari pangrams (sentences that contain every letter of the alphabet) daily to familiarize yourself with all keys.
